OUR STORY

1972: Seattle Beginnings Our first store opens in Pike Place Market, dedicated to home cooks. 

1974: Culinary Innovation The first West Coast retailer to carry the state-of-the-art Cuisinart food processor. 

1980: The Move We settle into our iconic spot in Seattle's Historic Pike Place Market. 

1988: First Catalog Orders are hand-picked and shipped straight from the office above our store. 

1995: Growing Nationwide Our second location opens on October 23 in Berkeley, California. 

1996: In-Store Cooking Classes Founded by Renee Behnke, bringing global cooking techniques and tools home. 

1999: Going Online Surlatable.com launches to share our passion nationwide. 

2000: Vitamix Partnership The first national specialty retailer to offer Vitamix machines for home cooks. 

2002 to 2005: Coast to Coast Stores open in Los Angeles and New York City. 

2020: Virtual Classrooms Online cooking classes roll out to connect with food lovers anywhere. 

2022: Sur La Table Collections Expanding our private-label line, backed by 50 years of kitchen expertise.
